Maths Curriculum

Intent 

At Broad Chalke we aim to provide an ambitious and connect curriculum which is accessible to all pupils. We want pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of Maths, to be able to reason and solve problems. 

How we teach Maths at Broad Chalke

We are beginning to adopt a Maths Mastery approach to our teaching, which is encouraged by the National Curriculum. This approach dictates that children, once meeting the objectives, are extended through questioning, deep analysis and exploration to broaden their knowledge. This ensures that concepts are fully and securely understood before moving onto new objectives.

At Broad Chalke we use the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the teaching of Mathematics) expectations to guide our Maths progression of Skills and Knowledge for each year group. For teaching, we use the scheme 'White Rose'. White Rose's yearly frameworks break down what children need to learn during each week of each term to master the learning objectives laid out by the National Curriculum.

An essential part of teaching for mastery is the CPA approach (concrete, pictorial and abstract) 

In addition to White Rose in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 we use the recommended scheme Mastering Number which supports the development of Number fluency. 

In Key Stage 2 pupils use Times Table Rock Stars to support their fluency in learning times tables and number facts. Children are encouraged to use this application at home. Key Stage 2 competitions and Class competitions are often organised which our children love!

Working Walls 

Working Walls are used in every classroom to support the children's learning in Maths. These walls contain current learning and equip the children to become more independent learners.
